PRESENTED DURING NEW YORK FASHION WEEK AND ARRIVING IN MARCH, SPRING 2023 IS AN EXPLORATION IN THE NATURAL MATERIALITY AND ARTISTIC POSSIBILITIES OF PAPER.
Drawing inspiration from the famous West Chelsea paper shops as well as the printing presses formerly housed at Lafayette 148’s namesake SoHo address, Creative Director Emily Smith designed a Spring collection presenting exquisitely constructed garments that emulate the ethereal and poetic qualities of paper in its myriad forms. The House’s longstanding expertise in fabrication is taken to new levels of sophistication, from the pastel translucence of silk papier de soie in airy tailoring to the deeply textural craft paper imagined as tactile separates.
The influence of art permeates the collection; Spring-forward dresses and knitwear are masterfully engineered in sculptural plissés and intricate textural folds—a visual nod to the paper works of legendary New York artist Isamu Noguchi, while vibrant pop colors conjure Matisse’s iconic papiers-découpés cut-outs.
Ultimately, through the exploration of paper as a raw material, Spring 2023 offers a modern celebration of the artistry, materiality and intelligent design that define Lafayette 148 by Creative Director Emily Smith.
“THROUGH FABRIC & CRAFT, We’ve been able to emulate the natural tactility of paper; we manipulate the fabric—by folding it, crinkling it, tearing it, layering it—& build sculptural forms. For me, it’s the raw material—our own version of the blank canvas—rather than its ornamentation that feels essential.”
